The following programs are my top five favorite programs that I use on a daily basis. I believe that one does not have to spend a lot of money on a program to get a solid level of performance and features. With that said, these five programs are all free of charge and can be obtained by simply clicking on the links below.

  1. Firefox:

This is an excellent, fully loaded alternative web browser for those of you that can't stand the thought of using Internet Explorer for one more minute. It has a large selection of customizable features that allows the user to design it around what they want or need out of their daily surfing.

  2. Pidgin:

This is a very nice instant messenger that allows you to eliminate the need for more then one program to keep in touch with all of your freinds and family who may use a different messenger then you. It covers all the popular instant messengers such as AIM, ICQ, Yahoo, MSN, IRC and more!

  3. OpenOffice:

This program is a solid alternative to the popular Microsoft Office Suite. It includes all of the typical features one would expect to find such as a word processor, spreadsheet, presentation, drawing and more! Users of other suites such as Corel, Microsoft Office and WordPerfect should find themselves right at home with a layout that is easy to learn. You can try it out for yourself to determine if it is right for you.

  4. AVG:

This is something that every windows based computer should have, it is none other then an anti-virus program to protect your computer from nasty viruses that would love to wreak havoc on your system. The program features automatic updates via the web and allows for scheduled scans at your convenience. It is also free of charge but the company that produces it does offer a paid version which has some added bells and whistles, for those that insist upon a higher level of security.

  5. Picasa:

Anyone who has ever owned a digital camera knows that typically the product comes packaged with a program used to import, organize and perform basic editing to the images obtained. While these programs more or less do get the job done, they can be big in size and slow in speed. Luckily there is Picasa, a program made freely available from Google that excels in both features and functionality. Organizing and performing basic editing to your photos has never been easier or quicker. Crop, print, resize, fix red eye and other artifacts in your pictures with ease. All this and more is possible through Picasa and with a price tag of free, there is no reason not to try it.
